CHAPTER NINE

LUKE WAS SITTING behind an imposing antique desk, gazing at a computer screen. As Kelsey pulled the door smartly shut behind her, he clicked the mouse and got to his feet, smiling at her. “ Kelsey,” he said, “ this is a nice surprise.”

His blue shirt was open at the neck, the sleeves rolled up. With a pang of sheer lust, she remembered kissing the pulse at the base of his throat, stroking the corded muscles of his forearm. That she should still desire him, after all that had happened, only stoked her rage. She said choppily, “ I just found out that you sponsored me at the art school by donating money to them. How dare you interfere in my life?”

Any thoughts Luke might have had about Kelsey coming here to resume their affair died a swift death. Furious with himself, he said coldly, “ I’ ve donated to them before. You’ re not the center of the universe.”

Her anger rose another notch. “ One of the professors told me about the donation and coupled it with my acceptance. So now I’ ll never know if I would have made the cut based solely on talent.”

“ Of course you would have. A school with that reputation? I could have donated a cool billion, and if you were a lousy artist they’ d have turned you down.”

“ You had no right to sponsor me after the way you treated me! Wanting me to go to a stupid dance when one of my brothers was in hospital. Not even trying to understand.”

“ He was released in less than twenty-four hours,” Luke said unwisely. “ I rest my case.”

“ How do you know when he was released?”

“ One phone call was all it took.”

Her voice was dangerously quiet. “ Have you made any other phone calls about me?”

Be damned if he was going to lie. “ I found out you sold the house.”

“ At least I know you didn’ t buy it— the price I got was too low.”

Her cheekbones were stained scarlet; her eyes, those exotic dark pools, blazed with fury. Even her hair looked alive, sparking with electricity, shot through with copper. He still wanted her, Luke thought. Hungered for her, ached for her, lusted after her. That hadn’ t changed.

“ So,” she seethed, “ you replace me in your bed when it’ s scarcely had the time to cool off, then you stalk me with phone calls. It’ s called harassment, Luke. Or isn’ t that word in your vocabulary?”

“ I have yet to replace you in my bed,” he said with total accuracy.

“ You— What did you say?”

“ You heard. I presume you saw the photo in the society pages, of me and Clarisse?”

Pain pierced the red mist of anger. “ You’ re damn right I did. She looked like she couldn’ t wait to get you naked— and you smiling at her like she was the best thing since rum punch.”

“ I was in a fog that night, Kelsey.
